Most people do not care about your god
I was walking to the post office today, and I encountered another person walking her god. It was a big and energetic god. She seemed not bothered that her large intimidating god approached me. Even though part of our modern American culture has become quite focused on catering to, and lavishing attention on their gods, I think it’s time to say something about what’s happening. MOST PEOPLE DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR GODS. Some people might be friendly to your god, because they like gods, and may even have one or more of their own gods. But you know what? I don’t know you and I don’t know your god. How do I know your god is friendly? How do I know your god won’t bite me? There’s lots of people who have been traumatized by gods. People have been injured by gods. People have been killed by gods. People’s pets have been killed by gods. Many people are allergic to gods, and some are highly allergic. Many people are just simply afraid of gods.

I’ve got a dog - I get it. My dog is cute; my dog loves me. It follows me around. It cuddles up to me, stares into my eyes, and I rub its belly. But I don’t assume anyone else cares about my dog, or wants it to come up and sniff them, or run up to them, barking. Even though my dog is small, I am aware that some people are afraid of dogs. Are not people who are afraid of dogs, and people with dog allergies worth some basic consideration, at least in public?
Some of it seems totally unnecessary. Take a dog for a ride in a car? Sure - dogs love that. Take your god into Home Depot or Lowes, subjecting other people to your god? For what? Giving you guidance on what light bulbs or plants to purchase? I get that some people use dogs for actual physical or emotional assistance - that doesn’t bother me at all.
I’m bound to anger some people who love their gods so very much. I’ve not even mentioned the huge amounts of money some people spend on their gods. Have you seen the transformation of the dog food industry into the god food industry, and the emergent god services industry, including spa treatments? It’s luxurious; it’s lavish; even outrageous. We could probably feed all the malnourished children in the world with what Americans are overspending to feed their gods and pamper them. It seems excessive to me; let alone obsessive...almost, dare I say worship.
So no, I’m really not interested in your god. I’m allergic to most gods, and I’ve had encounters with very aggressive gods. The only good god, in my opinion, is an obedient, well-disciplined god, and one that is kept on a short leash in public. I don’t want your god running up to me, even if your god is friendly. I’ll stop my commentary here - my dog is signaling it needs to go out and pee.
Weird post. I don't think I get it. Maybe because I don't own a dog.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment. I have two thoughts. It may be that modern god culture is not pervasive everywhere, but only limited to certain locations, and perhaps is not observable in some places. The other thought is that modern god culture has become so normalized that it is simply not noticed, and especially if one is younger, and not aware that the way dogs were treated as pets was much different 25 years ago.
