Eternal Optimist

One of my work colleagues recently commented, “You are the most optimistic person I’ve ever met.  You can take any situation and see the good in it.”  Well, sure - why not?  Am I supposed to look for what’s negative about every situation?  How would that benefit me?  How would that benefit people I interact with?


So I’ve been thinking about some of the good things resulting from our massive social distancing experiment.  For me, one of the benefits has been the discovery of people worth listening to.  Not being able to participate with my local church in person has given me the time to learn about other communities of Christian believers, the messages they hear, and the songs they sing.  It’s been a great experience!  I’m so thankful for modern telecommunication technologies that make it so easy to participate in community via long distances!  Here are a few of the Christian communities I’ve been able to participate in, and learn about, since the end of March 2020.  I’m not saying they are ideal, but in each, I’ve heard encouraging messages, the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and learned more about the diverse body of Christian believers. This is something I definitely would not have done, if there had been no stay at home requirements.

Most people do not care about your god

I was walking to the post office today, and I encountered another person walking her god.  It was a big and energetic god.  She seemed not bothered that her large intimidating god approached me.  Even though part of our modern American culture has become quite focused on catering to, and lavishing attention on their gods, I think it’s time to say something about what’s happening. MOST PEOPLE DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR GODS .  Some people might be friendly to your god, because they like gods, and may even have one or more of their own gods.  But you know what?  I don’t know you and I don’t know your god.  How do I know your god is friendly?  How do I know your god won’t bite me?  There’s lots of people who have been traumatized by gods.  People have been injured by gods.  People have been killed by gods.  People’s pets have been killed by gods.  Many people are allergic to gods, and some are highly allergic.  Many people a...

Participating in the Tree of Life series: Two trees in the garden

The story of the Tree of Life begins in Genesis Until now, the focus of this series of posts has been an explanation of the tree of life, primarily using Revelation 22, verses 1-3.  This post addresses the tree of life as described in the creation stories in the Book of Genesis, chapters 2 and 3.  The first mention of the tree of life is in Genesis 2, verse 9.  Here is Genesis 2, verses 8 and 9: Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9 The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food.
